Types of Intelligences...

  1. Literary – Literary intelligence is about the capability to read and write as much as imagination. In a world in which we have to network and collaborate with dispersed teams, some in faraway lands and time zones, the capacity to build leadership proximity is determined by how well you express yourself through language. Developing excellent language skills is then extremely important.
  2. Musical – Music is about harmony. Studies indicate that children who play an instrument learn to ‘listen’ much better – they grow up to be empathetic professionals. Not everyone though is endowed with the intelligence to write lyrics, compose, perform or play an instrument, but the capacity to build appreciation can be cultivated by anyone, and it has several benefits beyond just entertainment.
  3. Kinesthetic – Great sportspersons have what is called kinesthetic intelligence. In certain kind of sports, you do not have time to think. Such people have intelligence in their muscles, learning ability in their hands and legs. They are able to take critical decisions involving the body and the mind on-the-fly where each move is a new move, and sometimes life depends on it.
  4. Interpersonal – There are many people who are better able to converse, have the ability to make friends quickly, read other people’s emotions, and solve problems collaboratively. These people have a higher degree of interpersonal intelligence. They build more empathy and can work better as part of a group. This is hugely important for people who want to lead.
  5. Intra-personal – Some people are more self-aware than others. Those who are self-aware have a realistic understanding of who they are, what their true needs are, they are emotionally stable and can deal with the ups and downs in life and work far better. These people have a higher degree of Intra-personal intelligence. This is extremely important in professionals whose decisions impact a large number of people.
  6. Spatial – Spatial intelligence gives us navigational capacity. In the days of yore, among seafarers, some were specially chosen for their navigational skills. On an overcast night, they could steer a ship and instinctively know true north. In today’s world, in a profession like selling, you realize that some salespeople can map and chart a client organization much better than others. Some people can land in an alien town and map it so well that they become demonstrably more productive than others. These are spatially more intelligent people.
  7. Naturalistic – Alluding to our hunting and farming days, every tribe had someone who was better at recognizing animal calls, knew one animal from another by looking at hoof or pug marks. That individual was very important for the safety of the hunters and success of the mission. When farming dominated human activity, this person was the one who knew one herb from another, could tell you which wild mushroom to eat and which one would kill you. He was the one gifted with naturalistic intelligence. As we all become more environmentally aware and sensitive to the planet, naturalistic intelligence, that is, the ability to relate to the nature world, will be much more in demand across professions.
  8. Spiritual or Existential – We are all hardwired to appreciate the presence of a higher power. Some people can connect more easily with the spiritual world and as a result they can better deflect anxiety, can better deal with loss, and can better balance decisions with yardsticks of morality and self-governance. Such professionals, who know and can do the right thing, will increasingly become relevant in the world of business …
